I was really struggling with my weight for a long time because of the thoughts and feelings I was having. Once I realized that negative beliefs cause weight gain, I started clearing those limiting beliefs and started losing weight effortlessly.

Negative beliefs about weight loss are programmed into the subconscious mind throughout life through experiences and other people’s opinions and beliefs.  These negative beliefs cause weight gain by telling the brain that certain things are true.  For instance “It is hard to lose weight” is a negative belief that causes weight gain.

How To Identify Your Negative Beliefs That Are Causing Weight Gain

Most of our limiting beliefs come from other people and experiences as we’re growing up. Society also teaches us these negative beliefs.

The way to identify your negative beliefs that are causing weight gain is to think for a few minutes about what you’ve been taught about gaining and losing weight throughout your life.

If you grew up with a mother who struggled to lose weight and believed that it was hard to lose weight, you most likely hold the same negative belief about weight loss.

Even commercials on TV tell us how hard it is to lose weight and that we need their specific food program to finally be able to shed those extra pounds and stop being overweight.

If you have or have had in the past friends who have a difficult time losing weight, they may have talked to you about it and passed that negative thought on to you.

Or maybe your entire family (like mine) is overweight and from that you’ve programmed into your subconscious that you’re destined to be overweight because you’re genetically doomed.

Take some time and think, what do you really believe about losing weight? I would recommend writing down these limiting beliefs you have about weight loss so you can clear them. I’ll tell you how to do that in a minute.

Common Negative Beliefs That Cause Weight Gain

Here are a few common negative beliefs about losing weight that cause weight gain and struggle with shedding body fat:

  • It’s hard to lose weight.
  • I have to starve to lose weight.
  • I’m genetically predisposed to being overweight.
  • I have to follow a certain diet to lose weight.
  • I have a low metabolism.
  • I don’t deserve to be thin.
  • It takes a lot of willpower to stick to a diet and lose weight.
  • This isn’t going to work, just like all the other times I’ve tried to lose weight.

How To Change Your Negative Beliefs That Cause Weight Gain

In order to clear negative beliefs you need to start telling yourself a different story.  

The mind and body are connected.  The story your mind is telling is instructions for every cell in your body. 

Your mind saying “I have a low metabolism” is telling your cells slow down the metabolism.  This isn’t what we want!

Decide What You Want And Create A New Story

Decide what it is that you really want your body to be like.  Get detailed with it and create a new story and new positive beliefs. 

You have to be able to believe this is possible though.  If you say you’re going to lose 20 pounds in 3 days, you are not going to believe that most likely because you’ve never seen that be possible for anyone.

Find Proof That It’s Possible

Your brain likes what it has proof of.  Once you have decided what you want and created a new story, look back into your experiences and see where you can find evidence that this is possible.  Have you achieved this before?  Has someone you know achieved this?  Have you seen this happen on a reality show on TV? 

If you don’t have any experiences that prove this is possible, search online for success stories of what you want to achieve.

Visualize Or Script Your Ideal Reality

Practice visualizing yourself with the results you want.  Imagine every detail.  What would you look like?  What would you feel like?  How would you act?

If you do visualization every day, your brain begins to think this is reality and will fall in line with what you’re visualizing.

If you prefer writing or have problems visualizing like I do, scripting is a great way to clear negative beliefs.  To script to change your negative beliefs about your weight, you just start writing everything that you want your body and life to be like in detail.

Change Your Environment

If you find yourself comparing yourself to other people on social media, stop following those accounts. 

If there are people in your life who are constantly dragging you down about your weight or putting negative beliefs in your head about weight gain and your ability to lose weight, try to spend less time with those people.

Find people and situations that inspire you to be who you want to be and give you hope that you can be that person.

Use Affirmations Reprogram Your Subconscious Mind

Say positive affirmations on a daily basis.  The really important thing with daily affirmations is that you have to believe them.  If you say an affirmation and immediately have a reaction that you don’t believe it, don’t use that one right now.  Only use ones that feel good and that you can get onboard with.

I’ve included some positive affirmations for weight loss in this post, but you can always make your own that feel good to you or just use the ones from my list that you believe to be true for yourself.

  • Weight loss is easy and effortless.
  • I deserve to be thin and comfortable in my own skin.
  • I am beautiful just the way I am now.
  • My body is filled with health.
  • My body knows just what to do to achieve the weight loss results I desire.
  • The cells in my body are working to keep me healthy every second of the day.
  • What I’ve learned about weight loss from others is because of their own limiting beliefs and is no indication of my ability to lose weight.
  • Being a thin or overweight does not determine my worth. I am always worthy of everything I want.
  • I fill my body with healthy nourishment and it gives me health and weight loss in return.
  • I love my body and all the amazing things it does for me every day.
  • I am so happy and grateful now that I have the body of my dreams.
  • I create my own reality.
  • Whatever I ask for is given to me in better ways than I ever could have imagined.
  • I deserve to be happy and healthy.
